about
Maya Weinberg is a dancer, choreographer, and a dramaturg, based in Berlin since 2013. She studied at Seminar Hakibutzim College of Arts and Technology in Tel Aviv and worked as a dancer at Yasmeen Godder Company for 8 years. She was a teacher at Godder`s school, as well as other schools and academies such as The School of Visual Theater in Jerusalem, Smash Berlin and HZT- Berlin. In her Artistic practice she works on mapping the polifonic body by constructing/inventing imaginary communication systems, in order to capture the tragic-comic “In-Between Spaces” that exist between the spoken and the unspoken. Maya has created various works for dance and performance-art festivals, often collaborating with dance, visual-art and performance artists. Among her works: ‘Trained’, ‘On a faithful friend’, (both with Keren Ida Nathan) ‘Homonimi’, ‘MY TRUE SELF revisited' (for Fattoria Vittadini Dance Company 2011, Revisited 2017), Some Fish Swim Up the River to Die (Curtain Up Fest. 2011) ‘If It’s Fun’ (Tanztage Fest. 2014 Sophiensaele, Berlin and Tel Aviv Museum of Art - with Lee Meir) ‘While House’ with ‘The Instrument’- Maya M. Carroll and Roy Carroll (Curtain Up Festival, Tel–Aviv and 'ausland', Berlin 2014). The latest work of ‘The Defaults of Self Indulgence' (AG. Lee Meir & Maya Weinberg) is ‘The Extended Book Practice’: The work was created at ‘ausland’ Berlin and premiered at Petach Tikva Museum of Art (Israel) as part of the exhibition ‘Bi-bli-o-logia’: The Book as Body.
At 2018 Weinberg created the work: 'Missspelled', first part of a Trilogy dealing with the topic of Spell and Spelling. Weinberg understands the craft of art/performance making as a practice of SPELL(casting of spells, effect and affect) AND SPELLING (a linguistic communication system that produces meaning / shapes reality). The work was commissioned by HAZIRA - a Performance Art Arena in Jerusalem and has premiered at December 2018 at Leo Model Hall in Jerusalem and at KELIM Choreography Center in Bat Yam. In Berlin the work was presented at 'ausland' and at Dock 11.
Weinberg is also working as a dramaturg.
Recently she has worked with Roni Katz on her work (A Matter Of Ones Own, Uferstudios, November 2018, Berlin), Danny Neyman ('Walk in the park', BUDA, June, 2019, kortrijk), Mirjam Gurtner (Play, ROXY Theater, 2021, Birsfelden, Basel
Since 2020, she is curating together with Roni Katz, a series of evenings for emerging artist at Ada studio called NAH DRAN EXTENDED.
